The History Project
The Sites: Structure and Examples

Each site consists of a home page and additional pages defined by the user. The user can include tool-driven pages that include article lists, image gallery, guestbook, and contact form. Organization sites also include the option to add general-content pages about the organization, a calendar and a directory of constituent sites. Additional tools include an FAQ manager and an editor's web log.

Home

The Home page typically contains a welcome and an overview of the site. Other general purpose pages are similar.
Article List

An Articles page like our Newsletter contains a list of articles and optionally other components.
Articles

Each Article opens as a full page with text, graphics, links...
Gallery

The Gallery contains a list of albums. Use your albums themes or photo essays.
Albums

Each Album has thumbnail views automatically generated by the sytem. Each thumbnail is linked to larger views.
Images

Each Image has alternate size views to speed transmission. Icons link to previous and next images.
Additional tool-based pages are available to simplify construction. The layout of the site is user-defined. Several templates are available. All pages have the same general layout, but the body portion of each page is uniquely defined either by the user or by one of the built-in tools. Navigation and archiving and relations (links) among pages are automatically maintained by the system. Almost any page can be designated as the home page, making seasonal or thematic change easy.

History is at once global and local.

Site/Society Relationships

All individual history sites are part of a local organizing group, such as a school, a church or a local historical society. Some have web addresses (URLs) based on the local group, and some have URLs derived from The History Project. A directory or table of contents lists all the sites developed by the group.

Each site has a home page and an article list of a large number of stories about the person or other topic. The articles can contain graphics. In addition, each site can contain an image gallery with space for pictures, which can be extensively annotated for construct photo essays.

The following sites' editors have given permission to use their sites as examples.
